the Earth’s Magnetism

  • Earth acts as a giant bar magnet
  • The magnetic north and south poles are situated near but not at the same point as the geographic poles

Angle of declination

  • The Earth’s geographic poles correspond to the axis of rotation of the Earth, and do not align with the magnetic poles
  • The angle of declination at a point on the Earth is the angle between the geographic north pole and the magnetic north pole (Using a compass)

Angle of dip

  • At most points on the Earth, the field is not parallel to the ground
  • The angle between the Earth’s surface and the magnetic field is the angle of dip
