This is a measurement of the acidity and basity of a solution.
The pH of a solution is defined as:
The negative logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions in solution.
pH = -log[H+]
- As conc. hydrogen ions increase, pH decreases
- pH + pOH = 14
- A neutral solution has equal concentrations of OH- and H+ ions ; pH = 7
- Do not take into account the pH of water unless very large quantities
